Happy New Month!
I hope it has started off well with you.
I’m going to veer off from the usual outfit posts today and talk about the one thing we all love, well at least most of us, and thank God that humans invented it – MAKEUP.
I mean, how many of us leave the house without makeup? It doesn’t have to be a full-blown look but even if it’s something as minor as just a lippie, gloss or well done brows? Yea, that’s how paramount it has become to our everyday life and moreso to the fashionista who knows that looking good is a form of politeness.
It is because of this that I thought to bring on board fellow blogger and makeup artist, Winnie the Fashionista of Winnie The Makeup Artist to give us an overview of how this whole thing is done. They say if you want something done right, get the experts.
Seeing that I’m not one, let Winnie, guide you through this.
A bold lip is usually a really bright or really dark lip colour or a colour that stands out. It is guaranteed to get heads turning wherever you go. It’s also a touchy subject. Most people walking around with a bold lip are going about it the wrong way (pun totally intended) . Here are a few tips on how to successfully rock a bold lip:
1. SKIN TONE MATTERS
To avoid the possibility of looking like you’ve licked cream off a birthday cake, you definitely don’t want to wear for instance a bright pink shade if you are of a darker complexion. Medium to light skin tones are able to get away with it easily. Darker shades of lipstick generally look more desirable for darker skin tones.
2. PREP YOUR LIPS
Bold lipstick can really reveal the imperfections that are chapped lips. So ensure you exfoliate the lips prior to applying the bold lip colour to ensure it goes on smoothly and looks perfect. You can use a toothbrush or a lip scrub or a DIY lip scrub mixture of sugar and olive oil to get rid of dead skin. Then apply a lip balm to soothe the lips. Leave it on while you apply the rest of your make-up then wipe off the excess balm and you’re ready.
3. WEAR A LIP LINER
Which brings me to the second point. The process of putting on a bold lip colour can be daunting. In trying to get it right, it’s easy to panic and accidentally put colour outside the lip line. Use a pencil that is the colour of the lipstick to outline the lips then fill them in. I know you also really want to wear that bright pink lipstick as a dark skinned girl and that’s fine. That’s where the lip liner comes in. Use a flesh-coloured (meaning the colour of your skin or something close) to outline the lips and blend it in to create a transition when you wear the bold lip.
4. CONSIDER THE CONTEXT
It’s a brave and liberating thing to stand out. But there’s nothing worse than standing out for the wrong reasons. If your place of work is really conservative then wearing black lipstick is not the best idea. There’s a time and place for everything…including a bold lip.
5. PAIR IT DOWN WITH A NEUTRAL EYE…OR NOT
I love a good Smokey eye or an aquamarine colour on my eyes and more often than not, I try to wear a more neutral lip or a lip that will not clash with the eyes. When you wear bold lips, let them to be the centre of attraction for your face. Play up the eye or the lip. Not both…then again…There are exceptional times that you just feel like the universe has to see you in all your glory. No holds barred :).
6. BOLDER IS BETTER
In my journey on the inter web, I have come across trendy new BOLD lip colours. I’m talking dark blue, dark green, grey… Would you dare? I would. These are from the Brand Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics(OCC) and they’re called Lip Tars. They take the cake when it comes to unbelievably bold hues.
…..and that’s all we have for today.
